How to Add a Word of the Day Widget to Your Android Home Screen

Markword word of the day widget on an Android home screen

The easiest way to learn new words is to stop having to remember to learn them. A word of the day widget does that: it puts one useful word, with its meaning, on the screen you unlock dozens of times a day. You read it without deciding to, and by evening it is familiar. This guide shows how to add a word of the day widget to an Android home screen, how to set it up so it actually helps, and what to do on phones that make widgets hard to find.

The short version

  • Install a vocabulary app with a widget, such as Markword from Google Play.
  • Touch and hold an empty spot on your home screen and tap Widgets.
  • Find the app, touch and hold its widget, and drag it where you want it.
  • Put it on your first home screen page, the one you see every time you unlock.
  • Pair it with a reminder or two a day, so the word reaches you even when you do not open the home screen.

Why a widget works better than an app you open

Most people who download a vocabulary app open it for a week and then forget. Not because the words are boring, but because opening an app is a decision, and decisions lose to everything else on a busy day. A widget removes the decision. The word is simply there when you look for the time, check a message, or open the camera.

That repetition is the point. You do not learn a word by reading it once. You learn it by meeting it again and again, a little more familiar each time, until it turns up in your own sentences. A widget gives you those meetings for free.

How to add the widget, step by step

  1. Install Markword from Google Play and open it once. Pick your level and the topics you like during setup, so the widget shows words that fit you.
  2. Go to your home screen and touch and hold an empty area, not an app icon.
  3. Tap Widgets in the menu that appears.
  4. Scroll to Markword, or type its name in the search field at the top of the widget list.
  5. Touch and hold the widget and drag it onto your home screen. Let go where you want it.
  6. Resize it if your launcher allows it: touch and hold the widget, then drag the handles at its edges. A wider widget leaves room for the full definition.

There is also a shortcut inside the app. In Markword's settings, the widget section has an Add to Home screen button. Android then shows its own small window asking where to place the widget, so you do not have to find it in the widget list at all.

If you cannot find Widgets

Android phones from different makers name things a little differently, but the route is always close to the one above.

  • Google Pixel: touch and hold the home screen, tap Widgets, then search for the app.
  • Samsung Galaxy: touch and hold the home screen, or pinch two fingers together on it, and tap Widgets. Samsung groups widgets by app, so tap Markword to see its widget.
  • Other launchers: look for Widgets in the long-press menu or in the launcher's own settings. If you use a third-party launcher, its widget picker is usually in the same long-press menu.

If the app does not appear in the list at all, open it once and then look again. Some phones only list an app's widgets after the app has been started for the first time.

Set it up so it actually helps

  • First page, eye level. A widget on your fourth home screen page is a widget you will never see. Put it where your thumb lands after unlocking.
  • Choose what it shows. In the widget settings you can pick which category of words it draws from and how often the word changes through the day, and you can pin a word you want to keep in view for a day.
  • Make it pleasant to look at. The widget uses the theme you choose in the app, so pick one you like, or make your own with your colors and a photo.
  • Add reminders for the rest. Android phones do not generally offer lock screen widgets the way an iPhone does, so a short reminder at a time you choose brings a word to your notifications even on days you barely use the home screen.

From seeing a word to knowing it

The widget gets the word in front of you. Two small habits turn it into a word you own. First, when a word catches your eye, tap it. Markword opens the full entry with more example sentences, similar words, opposites, and where the word comes from, and you can hear how it is pronounced. Second, do the short practice round once a day. It asks you about words you have already seen, which is the step that moves a word from "I have seen that" to "I know that". More on why this works in how to remember new words.

Quick answers

How do I add a word of the day widget on Android?

Install a vocabulary app with a widget, such as Markword. Then touch and hold an empty spot on your home screen, tap Widgets, find the app, and drag its widget onto the screen.

Can I put a word of the day on my Android lock screen?

Most Android phones do not support lock screen widgets the way iPhones do. A daily reminder is the practical alternative: the word appears in your notifications at the times you pick.

Why does the app not show up in my widget list?

Open the app once after installing it, then check the widget list again. Some phones only list an app's widgets after its first launch.

How often does the word change?

In Markword you choose how often the widget shows a new word through the day, and you can pin one word to keep it on screen for a day.

Does the widget use a lot of battery?

No. A word widget only redraws when the word changes, which is a handful of times a day.

One word, every time you unlock

Put the widget on your first home screen page, choose the kind of words you want, and let repetition do the work. Get Markword on Google Play, free to download, and see a new word on your home screen today.
